Pray with someone
How to pray behind an imam, and what Friday means.
Praying behind an imam
Stand in line, shoulder to shoulder, and follow the imam — never move before him. When he says Allāhu Akbar, you move with him.
In the aloud prayers — Fajr, and the first two rak‘ahs of Maghrib and Isha — you stay quiet and listen while he recites. You don’t recite Al-Fatiha aloud. Say Āmīn after he finishes it.
When he rises from ruku saying Samiʿallāhu liman ḥamidah, you answer Rabbanā wa lakal-ḥamd.
If you join late
Whatever you catch with the imam counts. If you reach him while he’s in ruku, you’ve caught that rak‘ah. After his two salams, stand and make up the rak‘ahs you missed on your own.
Jumu‘ah — the Friday prayer
On Friday, Jumu‘ah takes the place of Dhuhr. It’s two rak‘ahs prayed in congregation, after the khutbah (sermon).
It must be prayed in jama‘ah at the masjid — it can’t be prayed alone or from a livestream. If you miss it, pray Dhuhr (four rak‘ahs) instead.
