How to find the Qibla

The Qibla is the direction Muslims face in prayer: toward the Kaaba in Mecca. Wherever you are in the world, you face the shortest direction to that point. Here is how to find it.

Ways to find the Qibla

1. Use a Qibla compass

The easiest way is a digital Qibla compass that uses your phone’s location and magnetic sensor to point you to Mecca. Khatawa has a built-in live compass that also corrects for magnetic declination — the difference between magnetic north and true north — so the direction is accurate for your exact location.

2. Use the sun

If you know roughly where Mecca is relative to you (for example, the general south-east from Europe, or east from the Americas), the position of the sun gives you a rough bearing. This is approximate — good in a pinch, not precise.

3. Use a nearby mosque

Mosques are built facing the Qibla, so the prayer niche (mihrab) or the rows inside show the direction. Aligning with a local mosque is a reliable guide.

Why magnetic declination matters

A plain compass points to magnetic north, which can be several degrees away from true north depending on where you are. For prayer that difference is usually small, but a good Qibla tool accounts for it. Khatawa looks up the current declination for your location and adjusts automatically.

If your phone compass seems off, move away from metal and electronics and move the phone in a figure-eight to recalibrate the sensor.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Qibla?

The Qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, which Muslims face during the five daily prayers.

How accurate does the Qibla need to be?

You should face the direction as accurately as you reasonably can. A small deviation does not invalidate the prayer, but using a reliable compass or a nearby mosque gives you confidence.

Why does the compass ask for my location?

The Qibla direction depends on where you are on Earth. Your location lets the compass calculate the exact bearing to Mecca and correct for magnetic declination.

What if I cannot determine the direction at all?

If you have genuinely tried and cannot tell, you may pray in the direction you believe is most likely correct; the prayer is valid.
